my country disables AI applications and deploys network jammers to prevent cheating in college entrance examinations

2025-06-10 06:37:49 HKTtodayinfo

In order to maintain fairness and justice of the exam, our country has also deployed real-time monitoring, biometric inspections and signal jammers to prevent cheating during the college entrance examination.

Before the college entrance examination, students studied on tablets and notebooks in the library.

According to Bloomberg, major Chinese technology companies, including Alibaba, ByteDance and Tencent, have temporarily disabled some AI chatbot functions during the ongoing national college entrance examination.

This move is intended to prevent students from using the technology to cheat in the competitive "college entrance examination." The college entrance examination was held from June 7 to 10, determining the university admissions of more than 13.3 million candidates.

Apps such as Qwen, Doubao, Yuanbao and Kimi have turned off photo recognition and Q&A during exam time.
Affected users shared screenshots on Weibo, showing that AI tools such as DeepSeek have blocked access during critical periods. These applications say fairness is the reason for temporarily shutting down features.

This news is mainly spread through social media, and Chinese students have expressed their dissatisfaction on Weibo.

According to the report, a user tried to send a photo of a test question to ByteDance's Doubao, the message was: "According to relevant requirements, the Q&A service will be suspended during the college entrance examination."

As the user insisted that this was not a photo of the exam, the application repeated the same message.

Another picture shared online shows that when a user tries to access the service during a restricted period, DeepSeek displays: "To ensure fairness in the college entrance examination."

The Guardian reported that these AI companies have not issued official statements. These feature pauses appear to be discovered by students, not announced by the company themselves.

Fairness is listed as a major concern

Bloomberg noted that both Yuanbao and Kimi chatbots acknowledged the move to turn off functions and said the restrictions were intended to "ensure fairness of the college entrance examination."

Other applications such as Alibaba's Qwen have also suspended photo-based features that may be used to analyze test papers.

These restrictions are part of a broader effort to maintain examination integrity. During the college entrance examination, digital devices such as mobile phones and laptops have been prohibited.

Additional measures to disable AI capabilities provide an additional layer of security to prevent technical cheating.

Advanced monitoring methods are also playing a role

China's crackdown on exam cheating is not limited to restricting chatbot access. Several provinces have deployed artificial intelligence monitoring systems to detect abnormal behaviors during exams, such as whispering or frequent eye contact between students.

In Jiangxi Province, the examination video will be reviewed after the exam. The authorities promised to deal with violations “in strict accordance with relevant regulations.”

New security measures also include biometric identity checks, stricter screening for hidden equipment, and the use of radio signal jammers at test sites.

Some cities have adjusted their office hours and opened traffic priority lanes to ensure that students arrive at the test site on time.
During the exam, public activities have been postponed to maintain a quiet environment.

The college entrance examination remains one of the most important milestones in Chinese students' lives.

The huge pressure on success continues to raise concerns about cheating, prompting authorities and technology companies to take decisive action.
In the United States, similar moves could trigger panic among students who are increasingly relying on ChatGPT and other AI tools to complete their studies.
