The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website issued an announcement Friday stating that due to possible infection with salmonella, August Egg recalled the approximately 1.7 million brown organic and brown free-range eggs .

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that at least 79 people were infected with egg-related salmonella, and 21 of them were hospitalized.
The areas recalled include Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration and stomach cramps. Most patients recover within one week.
Infections can be severe for young children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems and may require hospitalization.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people discard the recalled eggs or return them to the purchase store. Consumers should also clean and disinfect any surfaces that have been in contact with the egg.
