The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently jointly announced that August Egg Company in Hilmar, California recalled more than 1.7 million boxes of eggs. These eggs were suspected to be contaminated with salmonella and have caused infections in several states.

It is reported that the recalled products include brown cage-free eggs and brown organic certified eggs, with a shelf life from March 4 to June 19, 2025, and a distribution time from February 3 to May 15, 2024, and will flow to nine states including California, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Nebraska, New Mexico, Illinois, Indiana and Wyoming.
These eggs have been sold in chain supermarkets such as Walmart, Safeway, Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Raleys, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, etc. The packaging box or plastic outer packaging contains production code P-6562 or CA5330, and the Julian date is between 32 and 126.

As of now, the CDC has confirmed that 79 people have been infected with salmonella, of which 21 have been hospitalized for serious illness and no deaths have been reported. The patients range from 1 to 90 years old, with most cases concentrated in California, and the remaining confirmed cases are distributed in New Jersey, Kentucky, Nebraska, Nevada, Washington and Arizona.
CDC noted that the real number of infections may be much higher than the reported number, and “Many people are not recorded because of mild symptoms but have not been tested for medical treatment or have not been tested.”

Salmonella is a common foodborne pathogen that can be transmitted by eating contaminated food, water sources, or contacting animals and their excrements. Typical symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, which usually occur within 6 hours to 6 days after intake. Children under 5 years old, the elderly and people with weak immunity are high-risk groups and may experience serious complications.
August Poultry Egg Company said that the eggs have been transported to pasteurization and treatment facilities and carried out a comprehensive review of the food safety process, promising to "take all necessary corrective measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again."
In addition, the FDA also pointed out that the United States is currently facing a number of salmonella outbreaks. Last month, cucumbers grown on a Florida farm were also recalled for similar pollution problems, causing 45 infections and 16 hospitalizations, involving 18 states, and relevant investigations are still underway.

【Warm reminder】
CDC reminds the general public that if there are still eggs within the recall range at home, they should stop eating immediately, return them to the original purchaser or discard them properly. Merchants should also remove the relevant products immediately and thoroughly clean the equipment and surfaces that have been exposed to eggs to prevent cross-infection.
If you have symptoms such as continuous diarrhea, fever, nausea, etc. in recent days, please seek medical treatment as soon as possible and inform the doctor if you have experienced eating related eggs so that you can test and treat them in a timely manner.
