On June 5, life-and-death rescue was staged at Zhangbaqiao Ferry at Tuohe Village, Dongliuji Town, Wuhe County. An electric tricycle carrying the old couple broke out of control and rushed into the river due to a sudden failure of the brake. At the critical moment, veteran Xia Yu stepped forward and raced against time, successfully recapturing the two old men from the god of death.
Xia Yu introduced that at around 4 pm that day, he and his companions were conducting a straw burning ban nearby. Suddenly, he saw a tricycle in front rushing down the slope and falling into the water. With his military career, he immediately threw down his cell phone and jumped into the Tuo River that was more than one person deep before he could take off his clothes. After falling into the water, the elderly male driving was washed to a faraway water and kept struggling to call for help. With the solid swimming skills he had learned in the army, Xia Yu swam quickly towards the old man and tried his best to drag him to the shore. Without even having to breathe, he turned back and rescued the old lady who fell into the water safely. With the assistance of his companions and enthusiastic villagers, the two elderly people were in danger. After confirming that the old man was fine, Xia Yu changed out of the wet clothes and organized the salvage of the vehicle that fell into the water.
"The situation is urgent, I just want to save people quickly!" Facing the reporter's interview, Xia Yu's words were simple, showing her true nature.
Retracing Xia Yu's resume, the responsibility and responsibility of soldiers are demonstrated everywhere. From December 1998 to 2000, he served in the Fifth Detachment of the Anhui Provincial Corps of the Armed Police. In 1999, he was selected as a provincial guard of honor for his outstanding performance and participated in the Anhui Provincial Government's ceremony to celebrate the return of Macao's national flag-raising ceremony. During his service, he won many military commendations and was also named "Outstanding Soldier".

In April 2019, Xia Yu was placed in the Wuhe County Cultural Center to work; at the end of 2023, he joined the veteran emergency rescue team under the local emergency management bureau. During his time in the team, he actively participated in the formulation of systems such as "Water Rescue Operational Specifications", led the team members to carry out more than 100 professional training sessions, and transformed what the army learned into practical actions to protect the lives and property of the people.
From the military camp to the local area, what changes is the position, and what remains unchanged is the original intention of "serving the people". Xia Yu used his courage to jump, interpreting the veteran's solemn oath of "if there is a war, he will be called back", and also showing the spirit of the children of Bengbu in the new era standing up in times of crisis, adding a warm and dazzling color to the land of Zhucheng.
